Background of the Study

Nursing practice standards are essential guidelines that define the expected level of care and professional conduct for nurses (Okafor et al., 2023). These standards ensure that nurses deliver high-quality care, protect patient safety, and maintain professional ethics. However, implementing nursing practice standards can be challenging, particularly in healthcare settings where resources may be limited, and staff may face high workloads. At Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Katsina, adherence to nursing practice standards is crucial for ensuring that patient care is effective and safe.

While nursing practice standards are well-established in theory, their practical implementation is often hindered by a variety of factors, including lack of training, inadequate staffing, resistance to change, and poor organizational support (Adeyemi et al., 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the challenges faced by nursing staff at FMC, Katsina, in implementing nursing practice standards and to propose solutions for overcoming these barriers.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of well-established nursing practice standards, challenges in their implementation persist at FMC, Katsina, potentially compromising the quality of care delivered. Identifying these challenges and proposing strategies to overcome them will help improve adherence to practice standards and enhance patient care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the challenges in implementing nursing practice standards at FMC, Katsina.
  2. To assess the impact of these challenges on the quality of care provided.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the implementation of nursing practice standards.

Research Questions

  1. What are the challenges in implementing nursing practice standards at FMC, Katsina?
  2. How do these challenges affect the quality of nursing care at the hospital?
  3. What strategies can be adopted to improve the implementation of nursing practice standards?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Challenges such as inadequate training and insufficient resources hinder the implementation of nursing practice standards.
  2. The failure to properly implement nursing practice standards negatively impacts the quality of patient care.
  3. Addressing challenges in implementing nursing standards will improve the quality of care at FMC, Katsina.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing practice standards at FMC, Katsina. Limitations may include subjective responses from staff regarding the challenges they face and the difficulty in directly linking these challenges to specific care outcomes.
